MORE WAIKUNE MEETINGS
The future of the Waikune Prison complex is still on hold. A recent meeting between the Justice Department and the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board failed to resolve the issue and further meetings are planned. Board chairman Archie Taiaroa told the Bulletin last week that they were still trying to work out a solution. He said there would probably be another meeting between his board and the department later this week, and that in the mean time the interim order halting demolition and removal work on the complex's buildings till stands. Mr Taiaroa said the Waitangi Tribunal hearing on land associated with the prison is still some time away and that while the hearing could affect his group's plans for the prison it wouldn't necessarily.
