Rangitikei Cr to represent Waiouru
Waiouru is to be represented by one person on the Ruapehu District transitional committee. The Local Government Commission has dcemed that Waiouru's representative be appointed by the Rangitikei County Council. At last week's WCAC meeting Mr Murray Fitchett asked if Waiouru could call for two representatives on the transitional committee. Waimarino Mayor Workman said the Commission had already been asked for two, but that the scheme had only allowed for one. Mr Fitchett suggested asking the Commission again. Mr McLeod said it would seem logical for Waiouru to have two representatives considering that the Waimarino had three, yet both are to have three members on the new district council. He said if there were two Waiouru representatives on the transitional committee they
would have to be appointed by Rangitikei, but that then Waiouru would have two votes on the committee. Waimarino Mayor and transitional committee chairman Garrick Workman told the WCAC that the transitional committee would be happy for Waiouru to have an additional, ex-officio, member on the committee. Ex-officio members can speak at meetings but don't have voting rights. He said a Rangitikei County Council representative was chosen by the commission because Waiouru's only legal representative in local government was the Rangitikei County representative for the riding which covers Waiouru. Mayor Workman said Waiouru did not necessarily have to be represented by the riding member, Mr Ashley Strachan. He said if Waiouru was happy with Mr Strachan that was fine but if they weren't the RCC could appoint who they wished.
