Three new permanent teachers for Waiouru

By Myra MacGibbon Permanent teacher's positions at Waiouru Primary School have been given to only three teachers at the start of this year, a further five positions being advertised in this month's Gazette. The new appointees for permanent posi-

tions are Mr Brian Holt, who starts his second year teaching. He will teach J 2 children. Prior to coming to Waiouru he had taught in Napier as did his bride (of only three weeks) Mrs Juliet Holt, who has been teaching for seven years. Mr Holt's interests outside of school hours include

cricket. With teacher's rent increases having been in the news of late, their opinions were that in general they are happy with the accommodation they have been allocated, but were surprised that there was no carpet. Also, they said the high cost of living in Waiouru should be looked at, particularly in the grocery line. The other permanent teacher appointed to Waiouru school is Mr Brian Stewart, who had been relieving last year at Waiouru. Mr Stewart's teaching experience spans fifteen years, mostly spent in relieving situations around the Central Plateau and the bottom half of the North Island. He has also spent two years with Volunteer Services Abroad in the Solomon Islands. His after-school interests include squash and various water sports such as fishing and diving. Mr Stewart travels a round trip of 100 km per day from the other side of Taihape to Waiouru. He'says it is still cheaper to travel and live outside Waiouru than to pay the rent here, despite the loss of the Petrol Allowance since August 1988.

Relieving Teachers Six teachers have been appointed as relievers at the school. These include Mrs Mary Faulkner who will teach Standard Three children. She will be able to draw upon her previous fourteen years teaching experience. Mrs Faulkner comes south from Auckland. She is planning to pursue her music interests (Classical Piano) and her husband his Art interests. Mrs Cherlene Neels is known to Waiouru residents for her interests in ballet and Pippins. She has lived in Waiouru for two and a half years now and has been relieving most of that time. Her husband is in the Army and they have three girls. Mrs Neels is job-shar-ing with Mrs O'Loughlin. Miss Carol Gilbert travels daily to Waiouru from her home in Pukeokahu (60 km each way). She will teach the new entrants and again is no stranger to teaching, having been teaching since 1974. Other relievers, are at the school but most of them for much shorter periods. Also recently appointed to the Waiouru school staff is Mrs Morag Gray, who is a teacher's aide.
