OUR HISTORY
Having the Bulletin passed onto me from Chelleys here in Mangakino, I have been very interested in the pieces on times past so thought you may be interested in these photos.
The skiers would eat their hearts out over the snow falls from these days. 1. The Commercial Hotel was at this time run by Mr and Mrs Duggan. It had been Pikes originally.
2. The Printing office, showing what was always called the Tank Hill was at the back end of our backyard. As kids we were allowed in to see the paper being set up and printed (as long as we kept our
sticky fingers out of things). Mr Laurie Nation, Waring and Barrett were there at the time, so we could see the lead type sets being laid out and watch the lever click clacking the paper sheets over as they were printed. 3. The main street photo shows on the
left where the recently closed Farmers Trading Co was. The Tailor sign was that of Mr Oliver, Maurice Olivers father. The theatre of course was run by Harry
Thompson, all kids those days knew who Harry was. Saturday aftemoon the big scream went up when the Tarzan serial came on and who could forget Harry with his bags of lollies for every kid at the Christmas showing. The big paralysis scare (1938 I think) had forced the theatre to shut and it was a case of all kids in their own back yards, but I vividly remember dear old Harry getting permission to have one show, free if I remember correctly, with all doors left open during the filming so we could have a treat after being kept away from any mass gathering for a few weeks, and to top it all everyone got an apple as they left the theatre. Saturday night (late night in the town) we were allowed out to watch the Salvation Army band, quite a large one then with Brom on the drums. Us kids used to delight in standing around sucking lemons, they came up from Pipiriki. A clip in the ear was the reward for that lot if we got caught. After the Bulletin is read by us here numerous pieces get cut out and sent to various places to others who have lived around Ohakune/Raetihi areas also.
