Hut fees threat

Conservation assistant director-general Murray Hoskins is reported to have threatened to close tramping huts or prosecute trampers who don't pay their hut fees. Last week a Wellington newspaper reported Mr Hoskins as saying such measures were a last resort but would have to be considered if trampers continued

to resist the new hut fees system. He said if revenue from some huts did not reach the department's targets maintenance would be reduced or the huts closed. Also, two trial season pass schemes, one operating in the Wanganui area, will be reviewed when the whole system is looked at at the end of the financial year.
