Raetihi Monkey gives money to park
secret behind 100 years
A one-hundred-year-old Napier lady says her longevity is due to the years she lived in Raetihi. Last month Mrs Annie Pert turned 100 and told Napier's Daily Telegraph that the mountain air at Raetihi, where she spent most of her adult years, helped her reach her special age. Mrs Pert raised three children in Raetihi, though she was born in Dannevirke. The Daily Telegraph described her as "a sprightly lady whose alertness belies her years. While others might be reclining in an armchair Mrs Pert gets outside to tend her garden." Joining her on her birthday was her only surviving child, Mr Harris Pert of Taradale along with grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
This bungi jumper in a gorilla suit not only spent $75 to experience the thrill of having an elastic band pull him up short of the ground, after jumping off the Hapuawhenua Viaduct - he's also indirectly contributing towards a Tongariro National Park walkway planned for the area. As part of a trial permit for New Sensations' bungi jumping sessions, DoC is to receive a percentage of the money the company makes. If all goes well New Sensations and DoC will later work on a permanent concession for the business to operate within the park.. In the meantime a fund for building the walkway, to the Hapuawhenua Viaduct is growing with every bungi jump.
