AGI has new manager
Garrick Workman is the Army Garrison Institute' s new permanent manager.
Mr Workman took over the position on December 5 from temporary manager "Robie" Robinson, who leaves this week. Mr Workman was previously the manager of Farmers Raetihi, which was recently closed by the parent group. He had accepted a job as a Farmers manager in Levin, intending to travel to the Waimarino to attend to his duties as mayor of the Waimarino. But the position at Waiouru has meant he is now able to stay in the area. Mr Workman's background in retailing includes two years as manager at Farmers and before that, 16 years managing his own retail business, Boyds Bookshop of Raetihi. In his new job Mr Workman is responsible for the management of the whole AGI operation, which includes the camp supermarket and the community superette, the liquor store, cafeteria, the Sportsman's bar and the Junior Ranks' Bar. He has five divisional managers responsible for the day
to day running of each department. He says he has plan to introduce a number of new ideas into the institute, including improving on the presentation and type of
stock available, particularly in the clothing area. New organizational procedures are on his agenda, which will improve efficiency of the institute. "Generally we plan to lift the standards of
service," said Garrick. He said better communication among staff will help to achieve this aim. A direct bcnefit to customers will be a review of the pricing structures in parts of the operation, he says.
Farmers Raetihi went through a similar review process, said Garrick. He said much of what was applied there could be applied to the AGI operation. "Hopefully customers will respond to the changes," said Garrick.
