NO DONATION FOR WILDLIFE SOCIETY
Waimarino finance committee members decided granting the Waimarino Acclimatization Society a donation would be setting a dangerous precedent. The committee decided to recommend to council to not make the donation because other non profit making organisations could ask for money. Mayor Workman had asked the matter be referred to the committee at the last full council meeting after a rates remission application was turned down. At the finance meeting he moved that the Society be given a $250 donation. Cr Griffiths spoke against the idea, saying council would "leave itself wide open". "In principal giving a donation because of not being able to remit rates is quite wrong," said Cr Griffiths. Mayor Workman said he felt the Society filled ! an important role in the area and helped to attract sportsmen and tourists to the area. After more discussion Mayor Workman withdrew the motion. Cr Thompson suggested the Mayor and Cr Compton approach the Society to discuss other possibilities for revenue assistance.
