Money for College from Turoa

Turoa Skifields General Manager Tony Wright hands a cheque for 51547.50 to Ruapehu College Principal Harry Cast. The money was given to the college in recognition for the work done in organising the annual North Island Secondary School's skiing competition, which attracted over 500 competitors. Marketing Manager Andy Chapman said each year Turoa provides a donation to the college of $2.50 per r.kier in the competitions. He said this was on top of the arrangement to provide two day's skiing for the price of one offered to the competitors in the event. He said the event had grown from an annual competition between Ruapehu and Taihape colleges, into "arguably the biggest ski competition in New Zealand, if not the Southern Hemisphere". Mr Cast said the success of the event is due to the co-operation between the college and Turoa, which he said he would definitely want to foster. Mr Wright said the event was unique in its friendly nature, with top racers right to beginners enjoying the competition. He cited the case of a Coromandel boy who came to Turoa the day before the races to learn to ski, so that he could compete.
