County has reservations on Bruce Road control

The Taumarunui County Council is concerned that it will have to take over control of the Bruce Road leading up Mount Ruapehu.

The council believe there was no validity to the assertion that the county was the road controlling authority. Tabled at a recent county meeting was a letter from Hugh Aiken, the district roading engineer for the National R o a d s Board in Hamilton. Mr Aiken said there

had been no change to the level of board funding which continues at 100 per cent justified maintenance and 75 per cent for construction. However the responsibility for arranging these works falls to the defined controlling authority. Mr Aiken said with

the current seal extension funded, there was no need for further construction in the forseeable future. "I therefore believe it would be possible with good will to adhere to the policy stated." Mr Aiken said he thinks the Department of Conservation and Works Consultancy Services may well be happy to continue their present involvement in the maintenance activities. County engineer, Bruce Dobson said there was no guarantee the new Land Transport Authority would confirm the present policies of the NRB. He said there were many other functions for which the road controlling authority was responsible. Snow clearing, traffic control in adverse weather conditions and traffic guidance particularly on the loop road. Under the present system, the County has no power to rate DOC, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, the Tourist Hotel Corporation or any of the other club lodges o n the mountain. "This county therefore believes that it is illogical and unjust for the county to be the road controlling authority. Mr Dobson said the Bruce Road was unique in New Zealand as a special purpose road. But that did not mean county ratepayers should foot the bill for the road. The letter will be tabled for next year's NRB meeting. This story is reprinted from the Taumarunui Gazette.
