Tourism development plan mooted by business group

Formulating a tourism development plan for the Waimarino is being investigated by the Ruapehu South Business Association. The plan would look at defining where the area's tourism strengths and weaknesses are, and how and where to de-

velop the area's potential, said Association chairwoman Sue Allomes yesterday. "Tourism now generates more overseas dollars than any other producing sector in New Zealand," said Mrs Allomes. She said since Turoa was developed, the

area's obvious strength was winter but that the plan would look at development in summer as well as winter. Support from the Waimarino District Council was needed in the research for the plan, she said. Co-ordination among businesses, tourist op-

erators and the council was needed in the development of tourism potential says the association. Mrs Allomes said her group had asked to speak to the district council at either their next meeting or the one following to discuss the formulation of a plan.
