River friends meet
The first meeting of the fledgeling Friends of the Wanganui River Society was to be held in Wanganui last night to discuss the aims of such a group. Basically the group plans to promote interest in the river and its catchment area and the park and to promote public use of the
river and the protection of the river's natural values. The provisional chairman of the society is long-serving river advocate Arthur Bates, who has said the idea for the society has been around for a long time but that the restructuring of the park management system had delayed the start of the group.
The society would work closely with the Whanganui National Park administrators in its activities. Old and new films were on the programme for last night's inaugural meeting, including a 1956 black and white film on the river boats, called "Legend of the Wanganui River".
