HUT FEES MAY BE SPENT WHERE COLLECTED

Department of Conservation hut fees will help pay for better facilities where they are spent, according to Wanganui conservation officer John Lythgoe. He said last week the department would look at increasing the capacity of huts that are used often. The ticket system, which came into effect last Thursday, would help DoC find out which huts are being used the most, said Mr Lythgoe. He said the amount collected at each hut would send a very clear message to DoC about where money should be spent. He said huts that are not used could b e removed.
