Poultry complaint
Waimarino councillors discussed the keeping of poultry in the Ohakune ward at the last full council meeting. The discussion was held in committee (closed to the press and public) and followed a complaint from a member of the public over a neighbours' poultry. The complaint was that the neighbours let their poultry roam free, causing problems for the complainant and that their rooster's crowing caused annoyance. The council decided the birds should be contained in a run, in compliance with the by-laws and to enforce regulations over the maximum number allowed, which is 12. The council was told that the by-laws state that three written complaints have to be received before action can be taken over the noise of a rooster. Among other in-committee items discussed at the meeting were the imposition of a demolition order on a burned-out Ohakune house and a letter from a group of Rangataua residents asking for a water supply system to be installed at the same time that the sewerage scheme is built. The water supply matter was referred to the works and reserves committee.
