Nth Island Wethers sought
AEL Corporation Ltd of Hamilton has announced its intention to source wether lambs from the North Island, following support received for the company's South Island wether lamb contract. Managing Director Don Tate said the timing of this announcement was d e s i g n e d specifically to restore farmer confidence in their industry, particularly the live sheep export industry, at a time when export meat schedules were droppng away after some initial enthusiasm. Early season premiums were reducing and the dry season in eastern districts was compounding lamb supply factors, he said. Contracts through stock companies should be available early in 1989. The price would be NZ$23 or $24 for a 35 kilogram minimum live weight wether lamb depending on whether farmers supply stock to one or two shipments. Delivery to feedlot would be in April and May and wether lambs would need to meet defined health criteria, Turnpage 5

From page 4 Mr Tate said. Meat sired wether 1 a m b s would be preferred and pure Romneys o r Perendales would not be eligible. "This is an early advice to farmers to ensure they are aware of all market outlet opportunities. Farmers therefore should not sell all their wether lambs which traditionally go to the slaughterhouse prime early in the season."
