But Mr Brassington said that the bronzed image was best left to statues. "If there is one thing people can do to prevent all skin cancers, it would be to change the fashion for sun tans." Besides melanoma, there are two other forms of skin cancer - basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma - both of which are more common, but less dangerous then melanoma. They are both associated with too much sun on the skin. Melanoma will affect about 1000 New Zealanders this year, causing 200 deaths. "Malignant melanoma can be easily cured if it is deteeted early, and being a skin cancer it is easily seen on the skin," said Robin Brassington
