Instalment rates system chosen
Waimarino rates will be collected in instalments next year. At the last Waimarino Finance and Administration Committee meeting the committee decided to recommend to council that an instalment rating system be implemented to take effect from April 1 1989. The instalment system would see rates due in four monthly intervals through the year. Currently the council operates three different systems. In the rural ward rates are collected
in two instalments, in the Ohakune ward - one instalment, and in Raetihi - four instalments. Councillors discussed the worth of setting up a new system with amalgamation due to take place half-way through the next financial year. District Manager John Murrihy said there was still an advantage with combining the Waimarino systems because there would then be three systems in the new Ruapehu District, one
each for Taumarunui County, Taumarunui Borough and the Waimarino District. If the system wasn't set up there would be five systems. He said a decision on a subsequent Ruapehu District system would be "a year down the track". He recommended the system be implemented. Councillors Griffiths and Frew said instalment rating was better for the ratepayer because the staggered payments made the financial burden easier.
