Student finances

This "Chalk Talk" is the published speech from Kerry Baker, of the Ruapehu College Student Council, given at the Senior Prizegiving last Thursday

The funds for the student council this year started with the returns we received from selling tickets for the multiple sclerosis appeal.

This differed from last year as the seventh form co-ordinated the selling of tickets in Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru instead of the student council itself. This was most beneficial to the appeal, the school and to the testimonials of the people involved. We had disco's in the first and second terms and the profits from these also went into the student council kitty. With the senior ball this year running at a profit, this was an expense the council didn't have as in the previous two years the ball has run at a loss and the council has had to fund the deficit. The work day raised $3000 for the council of which $2400 went to the computer department to purchase a new Amiga 500 to go in the new computer room. This is in fact the first time that the student council has

funded the computer department, as we were told quite often when the matter arose. The excess money from work day will be left in the student council bank account, but a suggestion came up that the school either purchase or build seating for along the rugby fields. This, hopefully, will b e looked into in more depth next year. When cyclone Bola

caused mass destruction on the East Coast, the council raised money for the aid of secondary

schools affected by the cyclone. This was distributed between two schools and in receiving the letters of thanks, it was obvious that this money was appreciated. This leaves a healthy balance for next year's student council and I would like to thank Mr Cast for the assistance he offered everyone in the council this year. I would also wish next years leaders the best, because it's not easy.
