BRUCE ROAD UPGRADED BY NEXT FEBRUARY

Driving up Whakapapa's Bruce Road will be a whole new experience after April next year, if all goes to plan with a major deviation on the road. The work involves a 1.8km long deviation from below the first bluff,, heading to the right and up to come back to the existing road at Scoria Flat. The line follows a deviation that was begun in 1968 but not completed. The work will see a much straighter road with a much better gradient. Bullocks Construction of Wanganui in association with Works Corp as consultant engineers are carrying out the work. DoC staff say the work should improve the road in safety, driving time and also make the journey to the Top O' The Bruce "a nice drive". The contract to seal the road continues this summer and by end of February the whole road should be sealed, according to a DoC spokesperson.
