Desert Road fire doused

A fire which threatened parts of the Tongariro National Park on Saturday morning was put out by early Saturday evening. The first report of the fire was to the Army, who were supervising the Around the Mountains Relay, at about 3am.

The fire began just south of the Waihohonu Stream (the boundary of the Park), east-south-east of Ngauruhoe, and moved south to cross the Waihohonu Track. Two helicopters and two fixed wing aircraft were used in the fire fight A beech forest to the north-west was

threatened on one front of the fire after a wind change, and the edge of the park was threatened at the south east front of the fire. The fire was out by 5.45pm with more than 500 hectares of alpine scrub and tussock having been burned.
