Mts relay records fall
New Zealand's biggest relay held on Saturday November 5, of 100 miles around the mountains of Tongariro National Park saw records broken in five praries.
A total of 211 teams (2,206 competitors) battled strong winds and a fire raging in the National Park to set record times in the open, mens, womans, veterans and composite grades.
The open grade saw eleven teams compete for the honour of being outright fastest. The winners and new record holders are the Wellington Harriers. Their winning time of 9 hrs 21 min 58 sec
beats last years time set by the NZ Army team by 25 min 39 sec. Other teams to smash records were the Tiger Balm Road Team of YMCA Auckland in the veterans grade, the Wanganui Police in the composite grade, the Scottish team o f Wellington in the Womens grade, the DB Kia Toa of Palmerston
North in the Mens grade and the Vintage Veterans of Napier in the 2 x 50 mile grade. As well, Kia Toa of Palmerston North won the new grade of 4 x 25 miles in a time of 11 hrs 49 min 29 sec. The event gained international status for the first time with the entry of two Australian Army teams. In the
mens grade the Australian team finished 21st 12 hrs 1 min 46 sec and in the ultra or solo grade the Australian Army runner Trevor Harris finished 4th 21 hrs 9 min 51 sec. Temperatures were 42°C in Sydney on the day they departed compared to 12"C in Waiouru, New Zcaland.
