Partnership in building
John Porter and Peter Craig are two Ohakune builders who have joined forces to provide a service for building work from small alterations to house building. Currently they are working o n renovations to Waiouru Army houses, alterations to an Ohakune Junction house and building an A frame ski chalet in Ohakune. While most work they have taken on lately has been alterations and the like, John says it's "always good to build a house from scratch." John's building background follows a career as a carpet layer, a trade he still works at part time. Several years ago he left New Plymouth and full time carpet laying for four years' ski patrolling at Turoa.
This led to working for an Ohakune builder for a few years, then he decided it would be more satisfying to work for himself, so he went into partnership with Pete Craig. Pete's work background includes a number of years working in farming, then the completion of an apprenticeship with a Whakatane building contractor. Work there included all sorts, from alterations to house building to bridge building. Pete and his wife Catherine moved to Ohakune in 1984. They took a year off in 1987 to travel to the United States and Europe. While much of their time was spent travelling and skiing, Pete did find time to do some carpentry i n Colorado and in London.
