The Around the Mountains Rqlay has become the fiighlight of the central North Island athletic calender, with more than 2200 people taking part this year, up from last year's 1500. The relay start was at Waiouru camp with runners heading up the Desert Road north towards Turangi. Starting times for the runners were staggercd, with the womens' and childrens' teams first away at 3am. Other grades were started at half-hour mtervals afterwards. The ten runners in each team ran 10 miles
each, with teams other than the open section taking the choice o f either running two five mile or one 10 mile leg. Each leg is graded according to its challenge, with leg five from near the Ketetahi tum-off to approaching the Chateau turn-off generally thought of as the toughest. Conditions on the day can, of course make a big difference. Last year the final leg was especially tough for some because of strong head winds adding to the strain of the hill climb up to Waiouru.
