PUB CLOSES, RE-OPENS

National Park Hotel closed its doors on Friday October 29 - then re-opened them on Tuesday last week. The hotel's owner, Mr Don Fletcher, closed the pub on the Friday night because of the economics of running the hotel in the off season. But after a flood of calls from National Park locals on Monday who promised to support the hotel; Mr Fletcher reversed his decision, and decided to open the public bar and the hotel accommodation. Earlier Mr Fletcher was reported as saying the 1987 winter profits were eaten up by last summer's running costs. It costs $2000 a week to run the hotel, he said. The hotel's manager often opened the bars at Ilam and didn't see his first customer until 5pm, said Mr Fletcher. The closure would have been in contradiction of the Sale of Liquor Act and had drawn the interest of the Clerk of the King Country Licensine Commission.
