Taumarunui councils opt for north
Both Taumarunui councils are still voicing their wishes to be part of the Waikato region rather than join with the Waimarino and Waiouru to be part of a Wanganui- Manawatu Region. The Taumarunui Borough has resolved to "express its extreme disappointment that the Local Government Commission decision not to recognise Taumarunui's community of interest with the Waikato region, in particular the loss of the Westem Shores of Lake Taupo".
Taumarunui County Council is taking a stronger line and has resolved "to endeavour to have the county including the Western Shores included in the Waikato Region." The county council resolved at their last meeting that the commission's proposal be received "for information". The local member of parliament would be advised of the council's opinion, the council decided. Both councils have resolved to support the Hospital Board in its efforts to be included in a northem region.
