Tramper warns:
An Auckland man who survived a fall of 500 metres on the slopes of Mt Ngauruhoe, is warning other climbers to be aware of their own limitations . The man was one of a party of four led by an experienced climber, who had planned to make ascents of both Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. He suffered the fall while negotiation a patch of ice near the summit, receiving broken ribs, nose and
teeth and a shattered elbow and was taken to Palmerston North Hospital by rescue helicopter. The injured man is advising other climbers to master techniques essential for negotiating alpine conditions before taking o n climbing challenges. These techniques vary distinctly from those needed for tramping, and prospective climbers should b e aware of this, he advised.
