Debate 'Beyond expectations'

The following are excerpts from the Waimarino County Call, from the first decade of this century.
"The first debate by the newly-formed Raetihi Debating Club was successful even beyond expectations. The subject set down for contention was: That women are equally intellectual as men.' As anticipated the debate was prolific of much merriment and was absorbingly interesting throughout. The County Chamber was well filled with the local public including many ladies. Mr A.S. Bennett presided at the table. Messrs Avery (leader), Miller, Gibson, Vine and Campbell championed the affirmative cause while Messrs McKenzie (leader), Martin, Harris, Hird and Fryer challenged the assertion. The debate lasted until 10 o'clock and both attackers and defenders acquitted themselves creditably in their respective arguments with each speaker being applauded.
The balance of argumental ability however was with the negative. In summing up the chairman invited all persons in the room to vote, not in respect of their person al opinions on the subject but according to the merits of the debate. A show of hands being taken the result was: Negative 15; Affirmative 9. The chairman congratulated the winners on their success and the meeting closed with a compliment to the chairman."
