Protest of unemployment passes through Waimarino

Protest marches are very rarely seen in Raetihi and Ohakune but last week there was one in each town to protest at the high level of unemployment in the country. Sixty marchers,

mostly from the Auckland Unemployed Workers' Union, were involved in the Ohakune and Raetihi marches, and rallies were held in both towns. Very little response was evident at the Ohakune rally but Raetihi's was attended by a number of local people. The marchers later travelled to Wanganui and Taihape to hold rallies.

Organisers asked supporters to join them in Wellington on November 2 when they march on Parliament. The group enjoyed the hospitality of the Maungarongo Marae in Ohakune during their short stay in the Waimarino. F ootnote: Registered unemployed in the Waimarino at the last count were: Raetihi 106, Ohakune 68, Waiouru 8.
