Hillary is magazine patron
Sir Edmund Hillary Ruapehu Publishers' graphic magazine an pedition and Scienti The new quarterly magazine - the first issue will be published by Ruapehu Publishers Ltd in December - aims to help New Zealanders rediscover their country. It will cover contemporary and historical subjeets but avoid contentious issues. On accepting the patron's role, Sir Edmund said: "We need to read about politics and economics if we are to have a balanced view of our society but it will be a pleasant and refreshing change to have a magazine available that concentrates on our natural history, our basic heritage, and the way of life in our beautiful country." Publisher John Woods said Sir Edmund was invited to become patron to the magazine because of his pioneering spirit and interest in exploration. "We want the magazine to stimulate New Zealanders to take an active interest in the geography, history, wildlife and general environment of their country," Mr Woods said. "Sir Edmund Hillary is
is to be the patron of New Zealand Geoi chairman of its Exfic Research Board. one of the world's foremost adventurers with a great passion for the outdoors. W e believe his interest in New Zealand Geographic will provide an impetus for Kiwis to explore this country through the photographs, maps and articles in our magazine." Mr Woods said Sir Edmund agreed to lend his support primarily because of the magazine's strong education bias. "The magazine is in a sense a celebration of New Zealand and New Zealanders and it is fitting that one of this country's most celebrated explorers should be associated with it," he said. As head of the Expedition and Scientific Research Board, Sir Edmund will lead a
team of experts who will guide staff in collecting scientific data and research material for New Zealand Geographic articles. It is also expected that the magazine will, in time, sponsor its own expeditions in the national interest and it is anticipated Sir Edmund would take a role in these. Sir Edmund Hillary is the New Zealand High Commissioner to India. He retires from this post in July 1989.
