Progress report: Ohakune water

Ohakune's water supply treatment project needs someone to take responsibility for "seeing things are done" and that person is to be District Engineer Don Sattler.

That is tf the recommendation to full council from the Works committee is accepted. Mr Sattler asked the committee at their last meeting how the scheme was progressing. He said he and other works staff did not know who was giving directions for the scheme and suggested the council form a subcommittee to co-ordi-nate the project. He asked whether the council was still investigating possibilities for the scheme. The committee heard that the water supply capacity was still to be tested to find out whether there was a possibility of the sup-

ply falling short of demand. Meters are to be installed to measure flows to carrot washing sheds and rural users, councillors heard. District Manager John Murrihy said the consulting engineers Payne Sewell Limited are working through the procedure to g e t ministerial approval for the loan to build the system. Mr Sattler said the engineers were "all geared up" for when the scheme is let out for tender, sometime after March 31. Mr Murrihy said they still want to see the graphs that measure water flows and information on the capacity

of the line. They need to know the amount of non-residential and residential use for the subsidy application. Mr Murrihy agreed that someone was needed to be responsible to "see things are done" but wondered whether a subcommittee was necessary. He told the Works committee that Payne Sewell had asked for assurances that the scheme was to go ahead next year. He said he told them the council would go ahead with the scheme as soon as the money was available. The committee decided that the works staff should be capable of co-ordinating the project so handed the job over to District Engineer Don Sattler and his staff.
