Workman moving to Levin
Waimarino District Councillors are to be lead by an absentee Mayor from next month. Mayor Garrick Workman has accepted the position of manager of the Levin branch of Farmers, following the closure of the Raetihi branch of Farmers due next week. Mayor Workman discussed the matter, in
committee, with councillors at a recent meeting to gauge the feeling of councillors. He said they were in general agreement that it would be better for him to carry on as mayor than to have to hold a byelection with the proposed amalgamation of the Waimarino District Council, the two Taumarunui authorities and Waiouru timetabled to take place in October 1989.
Mr Workman said there were plans afoot to take over Farmers Raetihi as a going concem. He said while the store wasn't viable as far as Farmers were concerned, it had been profitable on a small scale. He said the success of the negotiations would depend on access to customer credit and buying power and costs.
