Goats just controlled
Park staff at Pipiriki are just managing to kecp thc numbcrs of wild goats under control, dcspitc cut backs in Govcrnmcnt spcnding in that rcgion.
Scnior Conscrvation Officcr Dcnnis McDonncll says thcre has bccn a sharp incrcase in thc numbcrs o f nanny goats and ncw kids sightcd along the Whanganui Rivcr, but
at prescnt the number is still managcablc. While thcre is no obvious budget f o r culling, staff take the opportunity of as many animals as possible on their daily rounds, in an effort to keep numbcrs under control. A major problem that arises with large herds is the damage that results to native bush and vegetation. Wild goats cause severe damage to canopy trees by ring-barking thcm at their base, and are known to cat virtually anylhing in the bush.
