Good results due to training

The good results achieved recently by members of the Whakapapa Moro Race Team has been directly attributed to overseas training camps and the arduous training programme conducted by coach Kurt Fehrenbach. Last summer nine racers went to Thunder Bay Ontario and four to Ski Club Vail. At both training camps the racers trained for six days a week. This season back in New Zealand the racers

train regardless o f weather from 8.30am to 4.00pm both days during weekend from July until September and for the full three week school holiday period. The current team consists of 24 children, aged from 11-19 years, all of whom have been through the Chateau Ski School Ski Development Programme. Four out of 11 National B Team members are current or past Whakapapa Ski Team members and Simon Wi Rutene and Chris

Mosaed both started their ski racing at Whakapapa. Three racers have been chosen for the National Development Team who are travelling to N o r t h America for further training in December. Presently the team is funded by the Whakapapa Alpine Committee from funds generated through sponsorship and donations. The largest contributors are Cadbury's, with a three year $3000 per year grant, the Ruapehu Ski Foundation and Ruapehu Alpine Lifts.

More funds are needed however if the team is to continue to achieve results similar to their very successful stint at this year's National Championships. Whakapapa Ski Team National Championship Results - Mt Hutt: Ben Tidswell, 7th in slalom; Kerry Jefferies, 9th in slalom; Dean Lister, 11th in GS; Ben Tidswell, 13th in GS; Kerry Jefferies, 14th in GS; Merren Clarke, 13th in G S ; Ben Tidswell, 11th in Super G; Kerry Jefferies, 12th in Super G.
