Take a kid fishing

The Waimarino Ward committee of the Central North Island Wildlife Conservancy challenge all local adult fishermen and women to "Take a Kid Fishing" this November.

They can do this as part of a New Zealand wide programme based on an American scheme. The American Future Fisherman Foundation successfully mounted an annual "Take A Kid Fishing" programme which was fully supported by all sections of the community and recognised by a presidential proclamation. The New Zealand Future Fisherman Foundation is a charitable trust based on the United States organisation which has been set up this year. The key objective of the New Zealand Foun-

dation is to give kids in this country a sense of confidence and self worth by involving them in a healthy outdoor pursuit. The Minister of Conservation, the Honourary Helen Clark has waived fishing licence fees for the month of November and all national sports fishing associations, service clubs, schools, scouts and guides are supporting the project. Children under 16 years will still have to get a special complementary licence from the normal fishing licence agents for the

month of November only. The licence selling agents are Ohakune Sports and Gift Centre and Raetihi Hardware Ltd. Ohakune Lakes Re-

serve is especially suitable because 300 Rainbow Trout of between half to one kilogram were released recently from the Tongariro hatchery, Turangi.

The committee would like to receive reports, so "Kids" are asked to ring one of the committee and tell them how many fish they have caught.

The local members of the Ward committee are Pat Whale, M i k e Burgess, Noel Bates, Ron Walkely, Gary Imhoff, Gavin Brown

and Harry Brown. Early in November there will be more information on the New Zealand "Take a Kid Fishing" programme.
