Bigamy charge A 38-year-old man appeared on a charge of bigamy. The charge was that, being a New Zealand citizen and being married, he went through a form of marriage with a national from another country and thereby committed bigamy. Court heard how defendant, who was granted interim suppression of name, was living apart from his first wife. He was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on November 10. Counsel: P. Brown. $150 assault A 34-year-old man who was granted name suppression was fined $150 when he appeared on a charge of assault. Court heard how defendant had slapped his sister during an argument about their mother's letterbox and after the sister had kicked him. Judge Unwin said that it was a minor family incident that had got out of hand. Assaulting a female An 18-year-old man from Raetihi pleaded guilty to two charges of assaulting a female during a 'domestic' quarrel. Court heard how defendant had assaulted his de-facto wife on two occasions, the first being on September 25 and the second a day later. He was convicted and remanded to appear for a probation officer's report and sentence in the Ohakune District Court on Thursday, November 10. Assaulting female, child A 42-year-old selfemployed contractor of Wanganui appeared on two charges of assault, one against a child, the other against a female. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Court heard how defendant, who had been drinking heavily, had returned home to await an important telephone call but each time the
phone rang the child answered it despite being told not to do so. He finally 'pushed' the child away from the phone and this resulted in the first assault charge. When the boy's mother intervened sher was punched in the face and thrown to the ground and this resulted in the second charge. However Court learnt that neither the boy nor his mother had laid the complaint with the police but it was brought to police attention by a third person. Defendant was convicted and remanded to
appear in the Ohakune District Court on November 10 for a probation office's report and sentence. Counsel: D. G. Harvey. Cases held over The following Ministry of Transport cases were held over until next month providing proof of service can be established. Christopher Miles Barnett, 19, technician of Wellington: no registration plates; no driver's licence. Tania Marie Gray, 24, housewife of Raetihi: No drivers licence; driving an unlicensed vehicle.
Herman Charles Gurnick, 29, self employed of Wanganui: careless use of a motor vehicle; drinking while driving; excess blood alcohol; supplying false information. John Richard Douglas Parata, 21, driver of Raetihi: careless use of a motor vehicle. Edward James Pickery, student of Ohakune: no drivers licence, safety helmet not securely fixed. The above cases are due to be heard on Thursday, November 10 in the Ohakune District Court.
