Top Raetihi rugby season celebrated
"Raetihi Rugby 88 A Successful Year" has been the theme last week for the Club as they celebrated probably their most successful year in all grades for some time.
The first presentation at the Ruapehu Hotel saw the Club, Northern Wanganui Rugby Union and townsfolk farewell Steve Gordon and Thomas Waata as they were bound t o leave on their overseas tours. Steve to the Pacific Islands and Thomas to Argentina. Last Wednesday night some 200 children and parents crammed the Raetihi Rugby Gym for the prizegiving of "Saturday Morning Rugby". The President D o n Windle thanked everyone for coming along and welcomed the Guest of Honour Steve Gordon who, along with Doug Hall Snr (Patron of the Junior Rugby) presented the prizes. The coaches for the
teams this year were Chris Winter (Senior), Keith Haitana and Grant Pope
(Intermediate) and Brett Journeaux (Junior), Steve Gray and Colin Hammond looked after the Midgets. Parents put on a beautiful spread including a large hangi. The players range in age from six to twelve.
Prizes: Midget grade: Most improved player Thomas Journeaux. Best and fairest player award goes to Clay Winter and Stewart Hammond. Best overall player, who receives the Hammond Trophy, Joel Gray. Juniors: Most improved player, Daniel Pearson. Best and fairest player Devon Gray. The best overall player,
who receives The Journeaux Trophy, George Taura. Intermediates: Most improved Raema Mowat. Best and Fairest Sherry Hansen, Shaun McDonough and Micheal Hope. Best overall player (Windle Trophy) Sherry Hanson. Seniors: Most Improved Raymond Marumaru. Best and Fairest Kelly Arahanga. Best Overall (Winter Trophy) Raymond Marumaru. Last Saturday night about 120 people turned up to a beautifully decorated hall to see the Seniors presented with their prizes. Northern Wanganui Rugby Union was represented by Robert Cleaver (President) and life member Bernie Carrington and their wives. The Wanganui Rugby Union was represented by Mr and Mrs Arch Roebuch (Past President) and Mr and Mrs George Hunt (President . Wanganui Union). Six trophies which were
won by Raetihi in the Domestic Round were presented by the Union including the Raetihi Challenge Cup. The Huki Whale Memorial Trophy for most points scored, the Black and White Cup for First round Winner, The Taihape Sub Union Cup and Carnival Shield for Championship Winner s. Gerrand Hipango received the Cubb Shielf for most points in the Northern Rugby Union Area. The Club trophies: Senior Reserves: Most Improved - Neil Katene; Best Forward - Phillip Hirote; Best
Back - Wayne Fehicia; Best and Fairest on and off the field - Mike Hapicpa. Senior: Most Improved - Paul Traw and Robert Edmonds; Best Forward - Richard Ormond; Best Back - Thomas Waata; Best and Fairest on and off the field - Chris Bennett. Steve Gordon and Marsh Tangatoa ruled themselves out of contention because they took on the roles as Assistant Coaches for the season. Best Woman Supporter was Stephanie Hawera. Best Clubman - Ronny Jenson.
