Ohakune's Patrick Cooper receives national award

The 1988 New Zealand Disabled Skier of the Year is Patrick Cooper of Ohakune.

The Brian Todd Cup was awarded to Patrick Cooper at the National Disabled Ski Week Dinner on Friday, September 16. Patrick won a Silver Medal for the Slalom Event at the 1988 Disabled Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria in February. Patrick, who is 20, has been skiing for 11 years. In the last three and a half years he has spent seven seasons skiing on the international circuit. \ Patrick is at present trying to qualify for a F. I. S. licence where

he will join a very elite group of disabled skiers who ski on this circuit to gain World Ski Ranking. Also at the dinner the National Training Squad was announced. Past Squad members include: Patrick Cooper, Below knee amputee skier from Ohakune; Ed Bickerstaff, Arm amputee skier from Queenstown; Mark Edwards, Spina Bifida skier from Christchurch; Loraine Te Punga, Above knee amputee skier from Hawke's Bay; Darryl

Gill, Cerebal Palsy skier from Dunedin. New Members are: Stuart Graham, Cerebal Palsy skier from Auckland; Kevin O'Sullivan, 3 track skier from Methven; Angela Sew Hey, Deaf skier from

Dunedin; Devon Shanks, Spina Bifida skier from Dunedin; Shane Campbell, a blind skier. These skiers will be training for the 1990 World Championships at Winter Park, Colorado, USA.

Another prestigious award presented was the Hall Trophy for contribution at a branch level. This was awarded to Jan Heine of Wellington for her consistent inspiring and unflagging work over the last 10 years.
