Innuit visit Ohakune Marae
A group of Alaskan Innuit people were given a full Maungarongo Marae welcome when they began their visit to the area last Tuesday. Sixteen Innuit Indians made up the party who are travelling around New Zealand primarily to see how the coun- , try's Kohanga Reo system works. People from kohanga reos all around the Aotea District Taurima converged on the Marae to be part of the welcome. The district covers the area from Taumarunui across to New Plymouth down to Marton. The kohanga reo representatives decided to greet the Innuits here in the Waimarino to save them from too much travelling during their short stay -here. !' Maungarongo Marae Kau- | matua Matiu Mareikura said j1 the trip was a return visit by
the Innuits after a group from New Zealand travelled to an indigenous peoples conference in Canada recently. He said while staying at the Marae the group would be taken up to Mt Ruapehu, to the Waiouru Army Museum and on a tour of Wanganui River Marae, starting at Jerusalem. A trip to Taupo and Turangi, taking in a ride on the Taupo Cat was also on the itinerary. Entertainment for the group by kohanga reo children was to be part of the stay, as well as entertainment of the hosts by the visitors. After a Hakari planned for last Thursday night the group were due to leave on Friday Morning for Matau Marae at Levin, before travelling to the South Island. Mr Mareikura said almost every one of the more than 50 kohanga reos in the Aotea District were represented at the welcome.
