Subdivision declined
Another residential B zone subdivision application has been turned down by the Waimarino District Council. The proposal was to subdivide a block o n the corner of Ruapehu Road and State Highway 49, into three sections. The plans also included building new dwellings on two of the new sections. The application was turned down because the new sections would have been less than two hectares, which is the minimum size for a residential B zone. The surveyor of the subdivision claimed that the proposal would see the land put to its best use. However, the council decided against approving the subdivision. Some councillors felt in allowing the subdivision the council may be asked to provide services earlier than is necessary for the town. Councillor Errol Sue
said allowing the development would "open it up to a flood of development in the area," and that the council was not ready for that because of the cost of supplying services. Mayor G a r r i c k Workman agreed with Cr Sue and added that it would be difficult for the council to allow the application when it had earlier declined one in the same area, though the earlier one was for a higher density development. Cr Bruce Thompson said the council had freed up the subdivision rules in the county while in Ohakune the council is reluctant to move. Cr Sue said he believed the area was where the town would develop next and in "allowing this type of development we do ourselves a disservice." Cr Thompson suggested it was time to look at costings for supplying sewerage services to the area.
