AROUND THE MOUNTAINS RELAY NEXT MONTH

If next week's Giant Man Triathlon is too much for you but you are still looking for a challenge, how about the 100 mile Around the Mountains Relay? Runners start from Waiouru in the early hours of th'e morning on November 5 and race up the Desert Road, turning off at Rangipo to go around the Tongariro National Park and its three mountains- Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. The annual road running race will be open to nine grades. They range from the youth grade of 10 or 20 runners in a team, to the ultra grade, where one runner sets out to complete the whole journey alone. Last year more than 110 teams took part in the race with over 1800 runners and their supporters at the event. To add to the ultra grade and the pairs grade, where two runners cover the distance, this year there is a fours grade. Runners in this new category run 25 miles each. Once again the event is to be organised and hosted by the Army.
