Wharepuni in use
Maungarongo Marae tangata whenua have been enjoying their recently renovated Tikaraina Ringapoto Wharepuni, after it was opened at a dawn ceremony on Saturday. More than 400 people from the Ngati Rangi gathered for the Tae Te Kawa opening ceremony. They came
from all around N e w Zealand as well as Australia for the event. Also opened at the ceremony were the three Maori Affairs kaumatua flats which were recently completed. Renovations to the building began i n April, and cost $50,000 to double the area of the wharepuni. It now sleeps 250
people and measures 190 square metres. All the marae's community, about 40 people, were involved in the project which sees tukutuku and carvings line the inside, many of them made by ACCESS programme people. The wharepuni is reported to be now worth about $150,000 to $200,000.
