McDonalds skiing for 100
Over 100 junior ski racers took to the Turoa slopes this weekend to compete in the McDonalds Cup ski race. Conditions on the mountain on Saturday were very cold with visibility at times reduced to a minimum, forcing race officials to cancel the second run of the scheduled Giant Slalom event. Sunday's slalom race was held in near-perfect weather conditions and, although the snow was soft, the race course held up well throughout the event. School holiday crowds were swelled by weekend visitors and although some were deterred by Saturday 's weather conditions the skifield was generally busy over the weekend. Sunday's fine weather had skiers rushing to take advantage of the good conditions, with all the skifield carparks filled by mid morning. This week the Steinlager Ski Festival was due to get underway on Thursday with a gelandesprung (ski jumping) event, the Steinlager Mogul Man, and a dual slalom race scheduled through until Sunday.
