Earthquake not linked to crater
An earthquake felt last Friday evening was probably an isolated event, according to park staff at Whakapapa Ranger Station. Staff at Whakapapa said the quake was not connected with volcanic activity and that the mountain is in a quiet period at present. Staff from the DSIR at Wairakei are involved in regular monitoring of the crater lake, its size, flow rate and temperature.
At the last inspection, the heat flow from the lake had declined and the temperature fallen eight degrees centigrade. Staff say the crater lake goes through a regular cycle of fluctuations in temperature and flow rate. Regular monitoring of activity is also measured on a seismometer situated at the Dome Shelter in the crater area with readings recorded on a seismograph at the Whakapapa Visitor's Centre.
