All kinds of fun next week

Jumps, bumps, head to head racing and a jazz band in the snow - the Steinlager Ski Festival hits ihe Turoa slopes next week September 8-11. The Steinlager brandname is synonymous with skiing through their sponsorship involvement in the sport over a number of years. This involvement has been through the national pre-season Ski Shows in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and the regional and extremely popular Ski Steiny Shows at various North Island venues. The Steinlager Ski Festival is shaping up to provide a lot of fun for both participants and spectators alike. On Thursday, September 8 the Steinlager Gelandesprung will get under way on the High Noon T-bar slopes at 12.30pm. This event is not for the faint-hearted as it requires the participants to launch themselves from a specially built jump with the objective being to travel as far as possible before landing. The Gelandesprung is a skiing long-jump event and is a much smaller version of the nordic jumping made popular at the Calgary Winter Olympics by the flamboyant style of "Eddie

the Eagle" - Britain's nordic jumper. Only skiers of advanced ability will be able to participate in the Steinlager Gelandesprung. Registration for the event will be at the Gelandesprung site. Friday's event, the Steinlager Mogul Man, also promises to be an exciting event but will be less restrictive in its entry requirements and will be open to skiers of intermediate ability upwards. The Steinlager Mogul Man event will be judged over two runs with time and style being key criteria. Points will also be gained four air time, degree of control the number of

tricks performed and overall "free style". The event is scheduled to start at 12.30pm on the lower Snowbird trail or Turoa' s High Noon T-bar. Head to head racing is the theme for Saturday Steinlager Dual Slalom event. It will be judged on a knockout challenge and will be open to all skiers. The race registration will be at th§ race site. Sunday is Steinlager Sport Prize day. It's general fun day on the skifield with numerous spot prizes being given away during the day. During the four day festival the Steinlager

Mountain Jazz Band will be entertaining on the Turoa slopes from noon-2pm each day. At night the Rheineck River band will be in action around the Ohakune nightspots "jazzing up" the apresski scene. The key ingredient to the Steinlager Ski Festival is to be fun and entertainment for everyone. With its exception of the Gelandesprung event virtually anyone can participate. A hefty selection of spot prizes will be given away over the four days in addition to the prizes for first, second and third placegetters.
