Fun times in Brownies
Brownies are a keen group of girls aged between seven and ten and a half. Joining Brownies is different from joining a club. You cannot be a Brownie just by coming along to Pack meetings for a month or so. You must, in that time, learn what it actually means to be a Brownie and look like one. Brownies wear a very smart uniform of a brown pinafore dress with a brown sash to put badges on and a white and aqua blouse. Brownies must know and understand: The Brownie Promise; the Brownie Law; the Brownie Motto; do a good turn (and keep a record of daily good turns for a week); the meaning of the Brownie World Badge.
Brownies must know the reason for: The Salute; the Left Handshake; the Brownie Smile. Brownies must be able to take part in: The Brownie Ring; a Brownie nature game. Brownies must show that they are able to: keep their hair neat and tidy; plait something useful; keep their hands, nails and teeth clean; do up their own shoes and keep them clean themselves; know what it means to be a Brownie, by hearing the Brownie Story. On Wednesday, August 25, four Brownies progressed up to the guides in a ceremony called the Flying Up Ceremony. There were Beverley Yewen, Margaret Hutson, Natalia Sexton and Sarah Calder.
This ceremony occurs after their 10th birthday at a suitable date and time decided upon by the Leaders of the Pack. Before the Ceremony, the Brown Owl, Jenny Darragh presented the girls with their Brownie Wings. Later when the girls change their uniform from brown to blue they will be able to sew on their, wings. It will be about six weeks before these girls can officially be fully fledged members of the guiding movement, are enrolled and able to wear their new Guide uniform.
