Wetlands symposium
Ducks Unlimited delegates from the United States, Canada and Mexico will converge on the Ruapehu region next month. The delegates begin a week-long trip through New Zealand o n September 14 and will meet in Turangi before passing the region on their way to an international water symposium at Mt Bruce in Masterton. The aim of the organ-
isation is to preserve, restore and maintain wet-land bird habitats and to propogate and preserve New Zealand's rare waterfowl. The Waimarino has its own following of members including Ohakune resident Di Pritt whose flock o f Giant Canada Geese is the largest in the district. She will be meeting the group at Turangi and representing the area at the symposium.
I thought your readers would be interested to hear about an unusual experience I had when I dialled a w r o n g Ohakune telephone number and got what I thought at first was a tape recorded message with a strong Australian accent. The voice said, without any introductory hello or identification: "If this was in Australia
you would be paying 22 cents for this but since you're in New Zealand it's free so go ahead and talk as much as you like . . . trust me, I know what I'm saying". I can't imagine who this character was but 1 suspect he either works for Telecom in New Zealand or Australia. If he doesn't yet, h e should.
