Whakapapa turnoff accident prone

National Park Police have wamed that there will be a serious accident soon at the intersection of State Highway 47 and t h e Chateau tumoff. In the past week alone there have been nine accidents in the National Park area, most of them occurring at the turnoff. National Park Constable Ray Cobb has warned of a massive collision if drivers do not heed warnings. Cars travelling too

fast from Whakapapa Village are often not aware there is an intersection and instead go straight ahead, he said. The result is that vehicles are ploughing through an adjacent fence and rolling. Mr Cobb attributes the accidents to a combination of poor concentration, speed and sometimes too much alcohol. For the sake of 15-30 minutes, skiers could get to destinations safely without putting others at risk, he says.
