Ohakune Karioi survive Huia rugby battle

Ohakune Karioi continued on their winning way with victory over Huia at Taihape last Saturday. Ohakune were set to have a battle on their hands with some key players away. They were Ray Brown out with a neck injury, Robbie Hawira with a back injury, and Ricky Harding with work commitments. But the forwards played with great determination holding the big Huia scrum and won most of the second phase ball. The blue and black displayed better driving techniques than their opponents. Had their passes gone safely tries : I ■ —

could have resulted, unfortunately the backs didn't take their chances, and although they looked classy they failed to finish o f moves. Jt was a good sign early on to see the Ohakune forwards dominate the Huia pack, and although pushed a little in the second half, they held on to give the backs plenty of ball possession to Work with. Another bright spot of the game, Ohakune did not concede any penalties so Huia did not have a shot a goal. In fact the o n 1 y points of the first half were from a penalty to

Kellick Harding in the 38th minute. Another penalty t o Kellick early in the second half t o o k Ohakune out to a sixnil lead and at that stage looked well in control. However, sustained pressure by the Huia team saw Wilson Smith score a try and Dean Chase with a chance to level the score, but the kick went astray. The Huia team is in danger of going down to second division so were probably thinking that the consolation point given for being six points off their opponent would be helpful at the end of the season.

But with one minute to go Steve Cameron received the ball in his own 22, side stepped his way around three defenders, broke the tackle of another and sprinted 60 metres for a great John Kirwin style

try. Kellick Harding converted to take the final score to Ohakune 12 Huia 4 which denied Huia the bonus points. Grant Harrison, who has been on the reserve

bench many times was given the chance to show his ability and that he did, playing prop, was named player of the day for Ohakune. Dean Chase was the player for Huia.

The last game for the 1988 season for Ohakune Karioi is against MOB at Marton 2.45. This game will decide the runner-up for the 1988 S e n i o r Champs.
