Wanganui shipping 80 yr prediction

With the proposal to export Karioi's woodpulp out of Wanganui's Port Castlecliff instead of Napier within the next 12 months as (reported in the Bulletin of July 26) it is interesting to read a report which appeared in the Waimarino County Call 80 years ago. In this report dated Wednesday June 10, 1908 under the heading "Community of Interests", Mr Remington, member for the Waimarino Ward of the Rangitikei electorate, said: "This growing district must not consider itself self-dependent. It must be acknowledged that

Wagnanui had done much to foster this district and they could in time cater for the whole of the shipping trade that must accrue from the Waimarino eventually. The port of Wanganui could handle all the stock, wool, timber and produce coming from this district. It was true that the (Wanganui) river service had in the past been run in the interests of individuals but bygones should be bygones. There should be mutual advantage gained by encouraging a community of interest between the two places."
