Compulsory cloth
To tie or not to tie, that was the question at a recent Waimarino District Council committee meeting. Mayor Workman informally asked councillors if they felt ties should be compuisory at meetings such as town planning hearings. Councillor Sue said he thought the chairman, who at that time wasn't wearing one, should, while he himself wasn't. Five men at the
meeting in question did not have their necks tied and one woman did. Councillor Thompson said some councillors may have difficulty getting to meetings with ties if they went straight from work and that it was better that councillors were there than if they wore ties or not. Some councillors felt it would be appropriate for members to look professional at public meetings.
Councillor Sue asked if Cr Thompson was referring to a previous meeting where he was dressed in his work clothes. Cr Thompson said he couldn't remember if Cr Sue was dressed or not! No decision as to whether councillors should compulsorily tie a piece of cloth around their necks for meetings was made at the time of the discussion.
